Poor little boy...too young to realize he's in a butterfly stroller with his sisters' baby doll!

Playing Outside
We love the warmer weather and have been playing outside more and having lots of back porch picnics. Claire has had two little friends over, Michael from Kindermusik and Sebastian from next door.
Happy Little James
James is really enjoying his Jump-a-roo and just squeals and bounces. He especially enjoys it if he's positioned to watch Claire!
And a video!

Birthday Party
Claire went to a birthday party for her friend, Claire F. today. The fun party included petting baby bunnies and chicks, painting a ceramic cupcake, dressing like a princess, and eating a real cupcake!

James 4 Months, Claire 23 Months
James is turning into a real sweetie. He just loves to coo and smile at anyone who will look his way. Some coos are starting to sound like a laugh when he gets excited. He kicks and kicks when he's happy which makes putting on his socks quite difficult sometimes. James likes to sit in the bumbo seat or his bouncy chair or be held as long as he can look around and see what is going on. We got out the Jumparoo for him and he's starting to enjoy time there for a few minutes at a time. He's not a big fan of the playmat these days. I guess he'd rather be upright, but he rolled over from his back to his tummy for the first time this week, so he may start to enjoy floor time more as he becomes more mobile. He has found his hands and likes to put them into his mouth. He tries to put other things into his mouth too but usually only has success with bibs and burp cloths. James likes bath time but doesn't like the process of getting out and getting his PJs on. He cries when I put him in the car seat but is fine once it's moving. Claire keeps him very entertained in the car and he doesn't fall asleep there very often anymore.
James has outgrown his rock-n-sleep, and it's been a rough transition to sleeping somewhere else. He kept wiggling himself over into the sides of the crib and waking up, so we have him in the bassinet of a pack-n-play because it's soft-sided. We've been trying several combinations of swaddled or not swaddled, crib or pack-n-play, inclined or laying flat to help him sleep better, but he's waking up at least three times a night. This has been pretty tiring for me, especially since Matt has been traveling a lot lately, but hopefully the end is in sight. James usually takes a catnap in the morning and evening with a longer nap in the afternoon. He is mostly wearing 6 month sized clothes and size two diapers.
Claire is so much fun these days. She just talks and talks and talks. If I'm working in the kitchen and she's playing in the den, I know exactly what she's doing because she narrates just about everything she does. She knows several songs and poems and can count to 10 in Spanish and French. She often gets distracted counting in French when she gets to 4 ("quatre" pronounced like "cat") because she'll say "kitty cat" and then laugh at her own joke. She is learning what sounds the different letters make but doesn't quite put the pieces together yet to tell you what letter a words starts with (I know, I know...she's not even two yet!). We play a game when she brushes her teeth where we pick a letter and make the sound while she's holding her mouth open. She's learned how to swish water and spit in the sink...a skill she also uses with her milk during a meal sometimes...
Claire loves to play and pretend. Favorites right now include her dishes, play food, stuffed animals, dolls, and her dollhouse. She feeds her animals and dolls and puts them in the stroller and takes them places. She likes to take them to MOPS, Bible Study, Kindermusik, or Castle Kids (the childcare at church) which is usually to the kitchen and back. In fact, she has determined places in the tub to represent all these different locations and she has her rubber duckies visit them during bath time.
Claire also loves to read books. She knows many Bible stories and talks about them a lot! Recently, she pointed to a wall in our house and said "This a wall. Come down like Jericho?" She also saw a picture of a statue and said "Statue like Baal?" She gets excited when a story from her Bible study class is also in her children's Bible.
Claire has had a fascination with muffins lately. There have been a few times when I've let her "help" me make them in the kitchen. She stands up on a chair and passes me ingredients, helps pour some things into the bowl, and stirs. Of course her favorite part is eating the muffins! She likes to pretend to make muffins with her play dishes and thinks everyone loves muffins as much as she does! For example, at the zoo--"Claire, what do you think the panda likes to eat?" "MUFFINS!"
Claire is generally very happy and easy going these days. She likes to be at home or out and about. She loves all her weekly activities and any chance to have a playdate with a friend. She doesn't like being put on the changing table to change clothes or diaper. I guess there are too many other fun things to do. She doesn't like to be told "no" and can quickly switch to crying, pouting, or full-blown temper tantrum (but even in these cases we can sometimes cut the tantrum short if we can get her to complete the sentence "big girls don't... cry" or get her to quote her Llama Llama book where Mama Llama says no fussing). She still likes to be picked up and carried. If James isn't around, she is always asking about him. She likes to show him her blanket in the morning and bring him toys, a burp cloth, bib or blanket when he needs one. She wants him to be in the bumbo seat on the table during meals.
Claire naps from about 1:30 until 4:00 every day and goes to bed at 8:00. She usually wakes up around 7:30 in the morning. She is wearing 2T clothes and size 5 diapers.
