James 12 Months, Claire 31 Months

James has once again had a month with a lot of changes.  Vocally, he babbles in little sentences now with various sounds and inflections.  He says "cat", "duck", "up", "dada", "hi", "uh-oh" and "tiger."  He enjoys looking at books and pointing to all the things on the page while "talking" about them.  Whenever Matt or I enter the room after being away for a few minutes, James excitedly yells "hi! hi! hi! hi!" while waving.  Another big change for James is the walking.  He's walking more than crawling now and get around pretty well.  He can easily walk across a room, often while holding something and talking the whole time.

Finding finger foods for James has been challenging.  He will always eat yogurt, bread, toast, PB&J sandwiches, and cheese.  He will occasionally eat a casserole of some sort.  He never goes for fruits or vegetables or meats unless they are pureed and he is eating a cracker while we sneak in bites.

James only takes one nap a day.  I've been trying to get him to hold out until about 2:00 so he is sleeping while Claire is napping or having quiet time.  James still wakes up at least once every night.  If I let him cry, it lasts for about an hour.  If I nurse him, he goes right back to sleep.  It's been a frustrating and exhausting process, but I'm still hopeful that he'll start sleeping better...someday...

James loves peek-a-boo.  It never ceases to be funny for him, and he can now cover his own eyes to play.  He can also clap and show us his tummy.  He loves to empty out tubs of toys, my pantry shelves, and the drawers in our coffee table.  He enjoys the tub of instruments and the rice box.  He does great in the church nursery and is usually very good while I teach his Kindermusik class.

At his checkup, James weighed in at 23 pounds, 6 ounces (just under the 75th percentile) and measured 29 1/2 inches in length (just over the 50th percentile).  He was a good sport even though he had to get three shots and a finger prick.  It was the first time I've taken both kids to the pediatrician by myself.  They did well.  Dr. Alli pretty much insisted that I send Claire out of the room to look at stickers with the receptionist while James got his shots, which was probably a smart move.  James is in size 12 month clothes, 18 month PJs, and size 3 diapers.  He hates to be put down and screams every time I put him in bed, change his diaper, put him in the carseat, or put him on the floor.  He is very strong, so these daily activities can be a real battle.

Claire has quite the imagination these days and has so much fun playing with her toys.  She is especially sweet taking care of her animals and dolls by feeding them and rocking them and taking them on stroller rides.  She still enjoys her dollhouse and books and play food.

Claire loves going to preschool.  One highlight of the past month was their fall festival.  She and her classmates dressed in western attire, went on a hayride in the parking lot, got to pet some baby animals and feed a sheep (Claire said, "And when it ate it, it was yucky!"), pick out a mini pumpkin, and hear some songs on a banjo.  I wish I could have witnessed the day because she seemed to have a blast.  She also continues to enjoy Kindermusik and Bible Study.

As of the last 10 days or so, Claire is mostly potty trained.  There are still accidents here and there, and she's wearing a diaper at night, but she's doing pretty well.  M&M's have been her reward.

A few weeks ago, Claire had a 30 month checkup at the doctor.  She was much better this time but still resisted stepping on the scale and letting Dr. Alli look in her mouth.  She weighed 33 pounds, 6 ounces and was 37 1/2 inches tall--both 90th percentile.  Claire is wearing size 3T.  She naps most days, probably 4 or 5 a week, for about 2 1/2 hours and sleeps from about 8 pm until 8 am.
