May 2014 Update

If I had to describe Ethan in one word for this past month, it would be "unstoppable."  Ethan started crawling (regular belly off the floor style) and pulling up to standing.  He had a few days where he would be stuck, standing somewhere, uncertain of how to get back to the floor, but now he has learned to somewhat gracefully bump down to his bottom.  Ethan even climbed up two steps yesterday before I snatched him up--I'm not ready for that yet!  This new found mobility has made Ethan very curious and introduced several new things.  His favorites include the open dishwasher, the kitchen warming drawer (right at his level), any cabinet or drawer that's unlocked, and toilet paper.  He is also now able to get to anything that Claire and James are playing with on the floor.  This has proven to be very frustrating to the kids.  Claire had finally gotten to the point that James understands not to snatch everything away from her (or at least now he knows that it's wrong).  James is used to being the taker and not used to having his things taken or his blocks knocked over.  I hear lots of "NO E-FIN!!!"

Ethan is now waving, playing peek-a-boo, clapping, playing "so big!," and signing "more" during meals.  Ethan loves finger foods.  He's not picky and has a shoveling method that pretty much allows him to eat everything before I've even sat down.  His favorite finger foods seem to be raspberries and black olives.  He's certainly tried a greater variety than the others had at this age because I pretty much give him anything we are eating that's soft enough for him to mash with his gums.  He's tried things like PB&J sandwiches, crab cakes, chicken casserole, and salmon.  He hasn't really turned anything down and I'm finding it hard to keep occupied during a meal.  This one is going to be trouble when he's a teenager!

Ethan has two new teeth on top, but not the ones we expected.  He's grown his lateral incisors before his central incisors.  OK...I admit I had to look that up.  To save you the trouble, I'll say that he has the teeth on either side of his front two teeth but is still missing the front two.  Kinda gives him the grin of a second grader, but much cuter of course.  Ethan eats all three meals and one snack in the morning.  He nurses 3-4 times a day and takes 3 little catnaps.  He's had a few afternoon naps that lasted a little longer, so he may be transitioning into a better nap schedule.

I feel like there isn't much to say about James and Claire.  They aren't changing at the same rate as Ethan.  We are adjusting to our summer schedule, or lack of schedule as it may be.  James is two, and I often have to remind myself of this fact since he is a big brother and has the verbal skills of a five year old.  James really enjoys playing with Claire and is now able to play pretend or play games with her.  I think they truly enjoy being together even though there is quite a bit of bickering and arguing.  James like to play with dinosaurs, color on the easel, play with blocks, and play outside.  Claire is doing very well with her reading and writing.  She is pretty insistent that she wear a "twirly" dress or skirt every day.  She still loves to play pretend.  Her afternoon quiet time involves her dollhouse or magnet dolls or strawberry shortcake dolls.  They both still walk around singing the music from "Frozen" all day long.  Claire is still a great eater and sleeper.  James sleeps well at night, is sporadic about naps, and is very picky about eating--especially vegetables.
