James 18 Months, Claire 37 Months

It would be impossible to count how many words James can say now and everyday I hear him put two new words together into a sentence.  He has learned all except maybe 6 of his capital letters and points them out all over the place.  He knows and says most of his colors.  He loves his big sister and calls out to her by name when she's in another room.  They are starting to be able to coexist happily while playing.  Claire even recently has said that she wanted to play with James.  James adores her and follows her around--often showing his affection by tacking her.

James likes blocks, trains, trucks, playing outside, dancing, running errands, working puzzles, coloring, playing with stamps, and reading books.  The other day, he ran into the kitchen, yelled "Ashes!", turned around int a circle, and fell down, laughing.  When James is happy, he walk around jibbering and "jumping" (without his feet leaving the ground) and lifting his arms up and down.

James is a thumb-sucker.  He only does it when he's tired and has his blanket (or "dit-dit"), so it's usually just in his crib or rocking chair.  Someday we may have to fight this habit, but for now it's really sweet that when I start singing to him at bedtime, he pops his thumb in his mouth and looks up at me with his beautiful blue eyes.

Claire is almost finished with her first year of preschool.  She has had a really great experience.  We will be switching preschools in the fall, but only because the drive to the current school from our new house is too far.  She will attend three days a week this fall.  Claire loves to go to preschool.  She's not quick to share details about her day, but I can usually prompt a few bits of information.

Kindermusik for the year is also wrapping up.  It has been a blessing to be able to teach a class with Claire and a class with James.  Claire sings right along with me (sometimes even louder I think!) and as the oldest in the class, definitely takes on a leadership role.  Usually there are one or two activities in which she doesn't want to participate.  She can be quite whiny during class but has finally learned that she has to sit in a chair and watch if she's not going to be happy.  James has been incredibly clingy during his class.  He's generally happy and will leave me to go get an instrument but comes straight back to my lap and wants to be held when I'm standing.  This has gotten tricky as my belly has grown.  Overall, though challenging, I'm glad I was able to teach them both.  I will take a break from teaching for now because I think three little ones are going to keep me quite busy!

Claire loves to dress up, play board games, color, pretend play and play with her dollhouse.  She can be quick to tears when things don't go her way, but she can also be super sweet and say some funny and smart things.

All sleeping and eating habits are pretty much the same this month.  Baby #3 is in the third trimester now and will be here before we know it!

Claire received a little gardening set for her birthday.  We're keeping our fingers crossed that something will grow soon!

Our local mall has a soft play area for toddlers.  James and Claire both enjoy running around there.  James was cute calling out "Claire!" when he couldn't see her.

The mall also has a carousel.  We've never actually ridden it, but we usually sit and have a snack and watch it and talk about the different animals.

Our Saturday plans were spoiled due to yucky weather, so we decided to do our first family movie night.  We borrowed a copy of Cinderella from a friend and had popcorn with M&Ms.  James dug through his bowl for the M&Ms and then just started scooping the popcorn out onto the couch so he could find them more easily.  After eating, he was all over the room and didn't watch much of the movie.  Claire seemed to enjoy it and stuck with it pretty well.

On a rainy, sick day, I decided to do a little science experiment with Claire--colored vinegar dropped on baking soda.  She enjoyed it, but only f or a few minutes before she was ready for something else.

And finally, a video.
